Lineage 1631.1

The works in the series Lineage 1631.1 (2025) extends upon an inquiry in reference to traditional Cambodian ikat dying techniques, and also questions the structures of the western loom as a construct to understanding the artists’ Cambodian heritage. Each piece begins with imagery drawn by my family, based on interpretations originally made by French archivists of lost Cambodian silk textiles. These interpretations are painted onto one continuous silk thread that are wound, unwound, and repainted, to produce imagery of birds, clouds, temples, and horses that slowly become distorted beyond recognition. The metal frames they rest inside reference frames used in the process for producing Cambodian silk weavings. The pewter objects above are cast from imprints made into sand and act as a referent to understanding the imagery below. The numbers on the end of the titles reference the length of thread used, with the thread for Parasol carrier 186.9 being 186.9 meters long and the thread for Flowering moon 164.8 being 164.8 meters long.
